Because the nominees are in.

And I'd just like to know why Benjamin Button got so many freaking nods. It's NOT that good, seriously. Especially in comparison to other three-hour movies, especially three-hour-long romances (i.e. Titanic, which, despite everything, actually was pretty good).

Yeah. This year's nominees are generally fail, with the exception of the supporting actor category for very obvious reasons. In my opinon, of course.

I agree on Button just not being that good, but I knew this was gonna happen from the second I first heard anyone from Hollywood talk about it. It's like Crash, it's the film they're excited about so who cares what the rest of the country thinks (although Crash totally deserved the win).

Some interesting stuff here. They threw Dark Knight a bone by nominating Heath Ledger and the cinematography, but not best picture. That probably means it's already received all the sympathy it's gonna get from Hollywood. Also, Robert Downey Jr. nominated for Tropic Thunder? A comedy? Oscar no likey comedies, so that's interesting.

Personal dissappointment: Where the heck is Gran Torino. I guess they're punishing Eastwood for filming in Michigan with mostly unknown actors.

All-in-all a very safe list of oscar nominations. NOthing out of place and Benjamin Button's probably gonna sweep the lot of 'em as the Oscars get just a little bit less relevant.

I noticed that. Gran Torino looked pretty good, too.

As for Oscars disliking comedies...this has only been in the last, like thirty years or so. They used to like comedies. :/

They like comic book movies less than comedies, but they'll still have movies based on book...

I dunno, I can't remember the last time an original movie from Hollywood excited me, all the sequels, remakes, and comic/games/cartoon adaptions have been far too common...

Oh wait, forgot about Wall.E and the Forbidden Kingdom, need to watch both of those still though.

Wall-E is going to mop up every award it is offered, then crush it inside it's awesome cube.

I have yet to see Tropic Thunder, but if Jr. is better in that than Iron Man, I'm impressed. Boy can act.

Also, Hathaway got a nomination?! YAY! Always liked her.

But, yeah. It's typical Oscars. Hollywood has a 3 month memory, so any movie released in Winter will take a bigger spotlight.

Though, gosh. kudos, Mr. Pitt. I never thought you was an Oscar worthy actor, but the nomination alone must be worth more than anything else.

i wouldn't say that Robert downey jr was better in tropic thunder than in iron man, sure kirk lazarus was an interesting character, but he was such a good tony stark that it makes it irrelevant.

Crash didn't deserve to win. They tried to preach against stereotypes by using stereotypical characters.

Black guy whining about being discriminated against when he does the things that makes it happen to him
White guy thinking he has justified reason to hate blacks when it's really isn't justifiable

I think he was much better in Iron Man than Tropic Thunder (that said his character was my favorite

That aside, wtf is 'The Reader'... haven't even heard of this film... Kinda goes to show you how out of touch these awards are with the general public. Reader has a 60% on RottenTomatoes... Button has a whopping 72%... while all the others are in the 90s.

Dark Knight will take a few categories, even though I thought the only thing that movie had going for it WAS the Joker. Hollywood still has a few more bones to throw.

...shoot I'll throw another bone. He deserves supporting actor because those other nominations didn't excite me as much as Heath.

Brokeback Mountain absolutely deserved Best Picture over Crash. Crash was interesting but didn't even warrant a nomination, let alone a win.

Seconded. I found Crash's win to be pure politics.

I haven't seen as many movies as I should recently (since my income dropped with losing my job), but I'm more intrigued by the Best Actress nominations. Nothing for Revolutionary Road, but Kate Winslet gets nominated for The Reader, which critics've been mauling as distasteful "holocaust chic". Looks like Ricky Gervais was on the money when he wrote that nun scene in Extras for her - even if she tried to frantically scrub the fact under the carpet at the Golden Globes.

Fingers crossed for Heath Ledger.

I know. I don't find the guy funny myself, but I have to admit that I grudgingly appreciated him reminding everyone about that, since he seemed to have a point.
