Posts: 571 (10/11/2009 3:52 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	At some point, while I wasn't paying attention, ITV managed to get hold of Cosgrove Hall (they of DangerMouse, Count Duckula, Jamie & the Magic Torch, Wind in the Willows, the BFG....). Having reduced its staff numbers to, count 'em, three; and moved its headquarters from Chorlton-cum-Hardy (hence Chorlton and the Wheelies); it has now been reported that the company is "on the brink". http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/broadcasters/cosgrove-hall-on-the-brink/5006622.article I really hope Messrs Cosgrove & Hall managed to retire while Fremantle was still raking it in on the DM & Duckula boxsets and thus got some nice retirement bonuses. The company lasted more than 30 years and managed to survive Thames Television losing its broadcast licence, but it looks like ITV has finally managed to kill it. What a waste of space channel that is these days - I'm struggling to remember the last thing I watched on it bar the news (I don't get home in time for BBC's 6 o'clock news). I shall have to break out my boxsets and hold a wake. Thanks for the childhood, guys! DW I am the terror that flaps in the night. I am the substantial and inescapable penalty for early withdrawal. My Mom watches Corry. But still, that's irritating. Kids' TV in Britain seems to be at its lowest these days. Help support the British Games Industry

And then the kiddywinks are spoilt for choice for what brain-degenerating garbage they're gonna watch next. Very sad to hear about Cosgrove Hall. They made a lot of my childhood too. Danger Mouse and Count Duckula were my faves. =(

Probably no worse than the currently dismal state of kids TV here in Australia. Toasted TV blows HARD, Cheez TV was waaaaay better. I used to watch that show from the AM to the PM, y'all!

This saturday had the following prime time tv shows on itv1: i. people do the funniest things ii. you've been framed. iii. tv burp (yay) iv. x-factor (where gurning idiots piss away their benefits to fill the pockets of simon cowell's money making machine). Between the beeb news and new top gears, have i got news for you, qi and buzzcocks (with repeats on dave) there's nothing else i can think of that i watch on tv... also tis said @ C-H

I have to disagree strongly with you there, Bryan. There's actually some very clever, educational and unusual stuff going on on the BBC's digital channels (I still want to know how the BBC can claim to be fulfilling its charter when we now have a two-tier system with terrestrial getting scraps for digital's table). There's just a very sharp gulf between the good stuff and the lowest common denominator drivel (admittedly, that's mostly on CITV - although CBBC's current anchorman is a waste of space as far as I'm concerned), with nothing inbetween. And even the good stuff provides practically nothing if you're over the age of twelve, as has been noted (also here). I miss the days of decent controversial drama and documentary for the tween and young teen crowd. The end of Cosgrove-Hall would be the end of an era - although it illustrates vividly how chronic things are at ITV. No longer a forum staff member. Perhaps there might be on the BBC, but what about what's on, say, the other 30 (or however many) children's channels if you have cable for example? That was the point I was making with my example - there's a huge choice of channels, and almost nothing good on any of them, from what I've seen. Though I do make a few exceptions, notably Pop - I was delighted to find out that they screen, for example, all three of the classic Sonic cartoons. Granted though that's just me being nostalgic - and besides, it's just one channel out of a large number, the majority of which from what I've seen don't have an awful lot good on. Also, is it just me or is there less time allotted these days to the kids' programming on the main channels? I'm pretty sure BBC1 has fewer children's programmes these days - though I can understand that due to them being migrated to the Beeb's main kid's channels.

There's absolutely no children's programming in the afternoon or just the full day in general AT ALL anymore on the local channels, unless you would just like to stick to PBS and Sesame Street. I remember coming home from school at around 4pm and having an hour left of Disney Afternoon, and WB stuff on the other channel... hell, before WB became the WB I had stuff to watch on that channel, too! Right now, cable/satellite isn't helping worth jack. As everyone has probably heard, Cartoon Network is pretty much a giant piece of ass right now ever since Genndy Tartakovsky practically stopped doing anything on CN and CN stopped acquiring any decent anime, and after Foster's ended, there's been nothing worthwhile to watch on that channel. People say Flaps or whatever is worth watchable, when it's just a slight Spongebob "wackiness" clone. Speaking of which, that's all Nick has anymore, and am glad they keep making new episodes of. Animation and kid tv is dead. It's all mindless drivel, or all directed to a tween audience, (which CN is turning into a tween MTV... kind how Nick is now, but TO DA MAX). Like I said: there's just an awfully large gap between the good stuff and the utter, utter dross. I don't mind Pop (admittedly, largely due to nostalgia) and Tiny Pop (didacticism isn't necessarily the worst thing in the world) myself - but even they're going to run out of passable material to repeat eventually, and start resorting to the sort of stuff that Pop Girl churns out. And yes, you're right about there being less children's TV these days. That was formalised a while back (BBC story here, ITV story here) - to be honest, I'm surprised that nobody else in the nostalgic crowd raised it when the ITV issue came up.
