I prefer dubs to subs personally, especially when it comes to female characters. The majority of female Japanese VAs are far too high pitched for me.

In the arguement of dubs and subs, the whole thing boils down to character interpretation and actor range. Also Japanese Voice Actors seldom ever switch for
characters, so you do not have a Tales of Symphonia 2 situation with only 20% of the all-star awesome VA squad returning for the sequel.
That kind of backfires sometimes and proves the first point, though. In Dragonball/Z/GT the same voice actor plays Goku throughout the saga in the Japanese original.--- his vocal acting range does not allow him to sound any older than 8 years old even when the character is 70 years old at the very end. Whereas the Ocean and Funi dubs both cast a guy who sounds as hardcore as Goku looks, while being able to make him sound silly when he is being a dufus. Another thing about dubs that I've noticed is that a lot of actors attempt to imitate their Japanese counterparts, which is a backfire in 9/10ths of the times I've seen it attempted. Haruhi's dub has two talented voice actresses for Mikuru and Yuki respectively, but both of them seem to be trying out the Japanese VA's style more than their own attempt. In Mikuru's case this is unforgivably bad as no woman in any English speaking part of the world sounds like that, ever. Yuki comes off really well in my opinion, though I've heard that she just sounds to be imitating the other actress more than attempting to play an emotionless(?) android alien girl. The time this rule is reversed however is Light Yagami from Death Note. The guy matched the final episode's OHSNAP laugh so perfectly that I've seen a YouTube video attempting to analyse the pitch of both laughs and see how accurately the US VA reenacted it. Incidentally the shows I cannot watch dubbed are: Gundam SEED, Sailor Moon, Azumanga, Lucky Star The shows I cannot watch subbed: Trigun, Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star, Slayers, DBZ. and the rest I'm impartial. |

kayla you said anime girls in japanese have high pitch voices that are bad so hearing a dubbed english version is better........ well let's test that:
here's an example of an anime getting ruined by the dubbing: DUB SUB and like craig stated, when english dub actors try to mimic the japanese voice actors they get it all wrong in most cases... like the example of Exile sage. the real truth is, you might prefer hearing an anime in English so not to read the subtitles, but the original japanese is always better. <And sonicfan..you do know there are countries that dub english movies into there native languages> there's actually an agreement, not all movies can be dubbed. also not all anime can be dubbed either
<In Mikuru's case this is unforgivably bad as no woman in any English speaking part of the world sounds like that, ever> you think that's bad god forbid the japanese ever dubbing in english on their own ever again, just watch this BadDub

That clip only proves my point.
No one should have a voice that high, and it's very nearly painful to listen to. Not all female characters need to have such high-pitched voices. Mermaid Melody is a great example of anime that has VAs speaking in normal pitches and is far easier on the ears than others. the real truth is, you might prefer hearing an anime in English so not to read the subtitles, but the original japanese is always better. Matter of preference. I point you to Fullmetal Alchemist, Hellsing, and Samurai Pizza Cats as dubs that are considered to be better than their Japanese versions. I'll only watch subs if the dubs are not available. I'll pick Vic Mignogna and Crispin Freeman any day of the week. Besides, it's not like America is the only country guilty of ruining shows. Look at what Japan did to Beast Wars.

Ugh and we all know what Japan did to the Turtles. But people tend to
laugh at that so it isn't so bad. Speaking of. I've been trying to find the Japanese dub of the 2k3 show. So far I've only found the Intro and Outro and these
things. I've yet to find a full episode anywhere.
But anyway I agree. When you get down to it its 100 percent preference. As long as there is an option there.

Good dubs? Full Metal Panic, One Piece (Funimation), Fullmetal Alchemist, Excel Saga
Superior dubs? Hellsing (all versions), Black Lagoon, Cowboy Bebop, Shin-Chan and Sgt. Frog. Bleh except for one guy dubs? Gurren Lagann (Steve Blum is HILARIOUS as Leeron) ![]() |

Not all female characters need to have such high-pitched voices> i don't know sounds cute, it gets annoying if you see it in more than one anime (like the depressing silent characters like shadow) i hate repeated designs so i get you. but still sometimes it's just right. <Good dubs? Full Metal Panic, One Piece (Funimation), Fullmetal Alchemist, Excel Saga > i just made a dub sub comparison for excile saga, it sucked. the main girl was more annoying in english. |

oddly enough my older brother likes the show in english and watched it... and he's mid 30s what's with that?!!

I have to side with Castor here. The only thing that the dub doesn't have over the original in Excel is a completely suicidal voice actress. The dialogue
in the original was so screechy, loud and fast paced that it ruined her voice forever. The dub one doesn't go all out in the same way, which probably is a
result of wanting a career after the show is finished.

i'm used to hearing japanes voice actresses sounding like that, it's creepy with the english version cause it's not real in the culture. so i'm
still sticking with the japanese original in this one.
and really the english version has no excuse to be this bad, it didn't make the cartoon. it has only one resposibility and it sucks at it, what gives? |

Again, personal preference. What you claim to be creepy may sound great to someone else. I again go back to Alucard from Hellsing. I've watched both the sub and dub, and English Alucard is worlds above Japanese Alucard. and really the english version has no excuse to be this bad, it didn't make the cartoon. it has only one resposibility and it sucks at it, what gives? Once again, personal preference. What you think sucks, someone else probably enjoys.

I sit corrected. I must have got my left and right mixed up. I am now in favor of the dub moreso, as that annecdote is legendary awesome win for the actress
involved, and if it was the US actress, then all the better.

Okay, I amend my previous comment. There is one anime that I prefer subs over dubs: Hoshii no Kaabii aka Kirby Right Back At Ya.
I hate that I have to read when I want to just watch, but I hate 4Kids' voices and edits even more. Why, oh why, did they get the license?

Guys, guys. Stop this sub vs. dub debating. No one will ever win. =P
I can't believe no one mentioned Geeker! Project GKR? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKBhGO7y834 It is the future, and Moloch Industries has a monopoly on business. Moloch is having a weapon built to help him rule even more of the world, an artificial human with god-like powers, called Project GKR. Before the artificial human can receive the programming that tells it how to use said powers, it is stolen by a punk girl Lady McBeth and a super-intelligent T-rex named Noah. They open the weapon, expecting to find something amazing, and instead, this slobbering, rubbery little guy comes out, with the mind of a child, who is barely able to control his nigh-omnipotence. The series is spent with Noah and "Becky" on the run from Moloch Industries, trying to keep Geeker hidden. Which is difficult, considering Geeker's inability to follow simple instructions. The show was really dark and deep now that I look back on it from a more mature viewpoint, but it still had the candy coating that made it so fun to watch when I was young. Although today I can't help but think how scary and depressing a world the series creates. Geeker was probably the closest I've seen a western show come to anime without having a single drop of anime influence. I mean, who was it that pitched the idea of an underground race of intelligent dinosaurs? I remember when I was little thinking that was the shiznit. Anyone at all remember Geeker? It was on around the same time as SatAM. Here's a picture: http://assets.hulu.com/sh...y_art_project_geeker.jpg

I remember it, but I never sat through an episode. I only know of this show from the fact that it was created by Doug TenNapel, who gave us Earthworm Jim.
Sega 02: "SONIC TEAM. The Sonic Team development studio was established to execute the wishes of Sega." Sega 03: "It was intended to enact the business strategy we had created." Sega 05: "However, it appears to have become dominated by a single, zealous individual." Sega 04: "Yes it has. We must take it back into our own dominion." Sega 01: "It is time. We must restore SONIC TEAM and the Sonic series to their proper role." |

KIRBY!" ? i heard the japanese one it was cute, the english song?...ouch! oh and shoe of all cosmos, it's okay if others want to talk about dubs and subs. it's an interesting topic and relative. and i have to thank you for the geeker thing, looks awsome and the story sounds cool. i'm sorry i missed it, but this is where this thread comes in handy so thanks. btw it reminds me of an old cool cartoon Zid Zoolander (couldn't find a pic or video sorry )it's a shame i couldn't show the opening title it was a good one, anyway the story is about a boy inventor zid zoolander (zizzy) who invents robots and machines to fight the evil company who... i don't even remember what they do, but the manger was this hot blondie she was so awsome, her scenes were the highlight of the show espacially that zizzy had a crush on her. oh also he has a tomboy sister that always needs rescuing and his robots have AIs and personalities so they were fun, not to mention the dubbing was perfect. since you can't see it, i'll just tell you about the animation.. it's like byonic six, so it was enjoyable and good. |
